Chile had goalkeeper Claudio Bravo to thank for securing a 0-0 draw against Peru in Friday’s Copa America opener in a result that left Group A wide open.
The teams canceled each other out in a torturous first half that was low quality, with the best chance falling to Chile’s Alexis Sanchez in the 15th minute, but the striker sent his shot over the bar after making a smart break into the box from six yards.
by Jorge Fossati Peru came out with intent in the second half and created a number of promising opportunities, but Chile’s Bravo made a string of saves to preserve the tie, including a remarkable double save to deny Gianluca Lapadula and Paolo Guerrero.
His performance in goal made tonight even more special for the former Barcelona and Manchester City a goalkeeper who, at 41 years, 2 months and 16 days, became the oldest player in Copa America history.
The teams were left with a point each, two behind Group A leaders Argentina, after the defending champions’ 2-0 win over Canada on Thursday.
Elsewhere in Group A, Canada Soccer said it was in contact with the sport’s governing bodies after one of their players received racial slurs online following their 2-0 loss to Argentina in Thursday’s Copa America opener.
Canada Soccer did not release the player’s name, but central defender Moise Bombito was abused online after a rough tackle on Lionel Messi where he grabbed the Argentina captain’s ankle.
“Canada Soccer is aware of and deeply troubled by racist comments made online directed at one of our men’s national team players following tonight’s game,” it said in a statement. “We are in communication with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL on this matter,” the statement said, referring to soccer’s governing bodies for the Americas.
Argentina’s win, with goals from Julián Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez, gave the defending champions three points, while Canada are bottom of Group A.
