China has lifted bans on beef imports from five major Australian meat producers.
Agriculture Minister Murray Watt confirmed the suspensions had been lifted by Chinese authorities overnight with immediate effect, the ABC reports.
“We’ve already seen several other processing operations lift trade bans, but now [it’s] five more,” he said.
“This is fantastic news for cattle producers, the meat industry and the workers in those industries.
The abattoirs that were shut down are in New South Wales and Queensland.
They were trading about $1 billion worth of beef when they were hit by shutdowns due to technical reasons.
Two Australian exporters remain on the suspended list.
This is a developing story, with more to come.
