A national technical issue with immigration electronic gates is causing major delays at Sydney International Airport.
The Australian Border Force has confirmed that the outage has affected smart gates at airports across the country and teams are working to quickly fix the issue.
“We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and have deployed additional staff to help facilitate passengers,” a spokesperson said.
“We apologize for the delays passengers are experiencing.”
There are currently crowds stretching from the immigration gate to the other end of the Sydney terminal.
“International flight from Sydney? There is a kilometre-long queue for immigration check,” said a would-be passenger on social media.
Virgin, Qantas and Jetstar flights are unaffected by the delays as ground staff call passengers forward.
Brisbane Airport was also affected and there were minor delays.
Melbourne Airport, Adelaide Airport, Perth Airport and Cairns Airport said they were not affected by the technical issue and had no delays.
