iOS 18 Rumored to Add AI-Transcription for Voice Memos

[ad_1]

Although Samsung and Google beat Apple to the punch in AI software, Apple is believed to be working on adding AI features to its products. A new rumor suggests that the next version of its iPhone software, iOS 18will add something its competitors already have: AI transcription of voice memos to its Voice Memos app.

AI transcription will provide a running transcript of voice notes as well as a summary, sources said AppleInsider. It is supposed to work similarly to the company Live voicemail feature introduced last fall in iOS 17. AI transcription and summarization will also be used in the Notes app, which will add audio recordings in iOS 18, according to April report from AppleInsider. This feature will also appear in the Voice Memos apps on MacOS and iPadOS.

If true, Apple will follow its competitors in adding AI transcription to audio recordings. Google has included automatic live transcription in its Recorder app for years, while Samsung’s Galaxy AI debuted at this year’s show Galaxy S24 phonescan translate conversations and summarize notes.

According to other AppleInsider reports, automatic translation of Voice Memos will be the first of Apple’s AI features added to the company’s software this year. Other AI generalization bonuses are expected to appear Safari to summarize web pages and on A messaging app to summarize large talk chains.

Some of these features, including Messages, are rumored to run on the device’s AI rather than through the cloud. This would fit with Apple’s emphasis on user data privacy, as using cloud-based AI requires personal information to leave the device, creating the possibility that it could be intercepted or stolen from servers.

It’s possible that Apple will announce this and other AI features at WWDC 2024, which is scheduled to start on June 10. Since the company usually uses its mid-year software show to release the first public betas of the upcoming iOS version, we could see AI transcription in Voice Memos or other AI-based features after that.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
