Revered by many as the greatest racehorse in the worldchampion mare Winx is about to become a star on both the big screen and the track.
A feature film celebrating her record 33 consecutive wins, titled A Horse Named Winx, will be released nationally in September.
Written and narrated by journalist Andrew Rule and directed by Janine Hosking, the film will also delve into the challenges of dealing with the Winx legend and health scares along the way.

“It’s only now that I feel I’m ready to tell the story of what we’ve been through,” said trainer Chris Waller, who orchestrated Winx’s incredible run with regular jockey Hugh Bowman.
As a yearling, Winx sold for $230,000 and went on to a world record 25 Group One wins, with prize money totaling more than $26 million.
She became known as ‘the people’s horse’ and her latest win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2019 attracted a global television audience of millions.
In 2020, Winx’s first foal was stillborn, but earlier in 2024 her second, by the stallion Piero, fetched a world record $10 million at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Winx retired with a record 37 wins, the same as Phar Lap almost a century ago.
Phar Lap’s story was also made into a movie in 1983.
This highly acclaimed film is directed by Simon Winsor and stars Tom Burlinson as the lovable horseman Tommy Woodcock.
A Horse Named Winx is funded by Screen Australia with Screen NSW.
Legendary Channel 7 commentator Bruce McAvaney remarked in Winx’s 2019 final race that “we’ve never had a horse that meant so much to so many people”.
McAvaney also said Winx was “the greatest thoroughbred Australia has ever seen”.
