A police officer came close to losing her arm in a sword attack in Hainaut, north-east London, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley said.
A 14-year-old boy was killed and four other people were injured in the incident on Tuesday.
Rowley told LBC: “The first thing you have to say is to the parents involved who have lost their 14-year-old and it’s just horrific and it’s everybody’s worst nightmare. I’m sure we’re all thinking about them.
“We were on the scene for 12 minutes and he was taken into custody after 22 minutes. Apparently, some of the first contacts resulted in very serious injuries to police officers.
He said one officer had serious injuries to his hand, while a female colleague was in surgery for several hours on Tuesday after suffering “horribly serious” wounds to her hand.
“People say the police are running into danger. What you’ve actually seen in some of the videos that are sort of social media and new sites like your own, you’re actually seeing what it really looks like. You have officers running at someone brandishing a sword,” Rowley said.
